Specialty Certification in OT

It is very interesting learning about all the different specialty certifications available to occupational therapists. One that excites me and one day I would like to pursue is a certification in advanced seating and mobility. My grandmother was in a wheel chair for basically her whole life, so being able to help individuals in wheelchairs by providing them different types of strategies to make life easier would really be a wonderful opportunity for myself. It is hard to understand the struggles that they go through every day trying to live their life. Grocery shopping, bathing, driving, cooking are all activities that individuals in wheelchairs may struggle with. Hopefully in my time in OT school I will be able to learn more about advanced seating and mobility certification and teach those individuals different techniques to cope in life.

    That's a great specialty practice area - one that you will need to continue to learn about and to develop your knowledge and skills in after entering the field as an entry-level OT.

OT Acute Care Observation Hours

When I first started getting my observation hours in occupational therapy, I observed at a hospital in Arkansas. At the time I knew it was an acute care setting but did not know the specifics of what acute care entailed. As I have started OT school I have come to realize acute care is a type of setting where the patients stay is not going to be long. This was particular true in the case of the therapist I worked with. He performed therapy to clients on the ICU floor of the hospital. Throughout my time here shadowing I do not think we ever saw the same patient twice, but it was an interesting experience where I learned a lot. I think now as I have learned more about the practice of occupational therapy, I would enjoy the observation process more. I feel as if even though, I have only been in school for a little while, I am much more knowledgeable about the field. Nutrition Interventions

Just the other day in our older adults course, we had a guest lecturer about the value of nutrition in individual's lives. She did a great job conveying her message on the importance of people receiving proper nutrition and ensuring that they are not malnourished. Malnourishment has been a problem for many years in the hospital setting and continues to be increasingly prevalent issue. Our guest speaker stressed the importance of educating our clients on ways to avoid malnourishment and increase well-being. The purpose of this blog post is to discuss two interventions that we as future occupational therapists can do to help our clients increase their quality of life.  As our guest lecturer mentioned there are basically two main ways we can help someone who is not getting proper nutrition. Assistive Technology

When I first learned about occupational therapy and what it is was, I kept hearing the word assistive technology thrown around. I had a general idea as to what it was, but always wanted to know more about it. The definition states that it is any piece of equipment, software program or product system used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. Assistive technology is further broken down into three different categories: low tech, medium tech and high tech. Low tech would be consider something like a pencil grip, medium tech would be considered something like a watch and high tech might be an Iphone or computer.
