OT Acute Care Observation Hours

When I first started getting my observation hours in occupational therapy, I observed at a hospital in Arkansas. At the time I knew it was an acute care setting but did not know the specifics of what acute care entailed. As I have started OT school I have come to realize acute care is a type of setting where the patients stay is not going to be long. This was particular true in the case of the therapist I worked with. He performed therapy to clients on the ICU floor of the hospital. Throughout my time here shadowing I do not think we ever saw the same patient twice, but it was an interesting experience where I learned a lot. I think now as I have learned more about the practice of occupational therapy, I would enjoy the observation process more. I feel as if even though, I have only been in school for a little while, I am much more knowledgeable about the field. I think having this knowledge would help me understand what is going on as well as be able to ask more knowledgeable questions regarding the treatments.

The Interview Process

As we approach graduation, the pressure of getting a job will begin to build. Part of that pressure is the interview process. For me, I am always a nervous wreck anytime I have to interview, present a presentation or just talk in front of a crowd all together. Fortunately, I got the opportunity to practice these skills with a mock interview assignment. Aging and Sexual Health

Last Friday in our class centered around older adults, we had a guest lecturer who talked about the importance of sexual health and aging. She explained the numerous benefits sexual activity can have on the aging adult. Studies have shown that orgasms can relieve pain, reduce stress, improve sleep and boost the immune system. Overall any form of sexual activity can increase cognitive functioning. She then talked about why some older adults participate in a decreased amount of sexual activity and ways we can combat this. Two interventions are listed below: one in a group based setting and one client-based intervention. One intervention that comes to mind is a group intervention for a group of males with erectile dysfunction. This would involve mostly educating the clients on ways to improve sexual health as you get older. Social Participation Frame of Reference

The Social Participation Frame of Reference theorizes how important emotion is to motivate and engage children in social participation. Children learn from others and so their relationship with their parents is going to provide the foundation for their emotional development. This frame of reference understands that children with disabilities can have a decreased ability to understand emotions, making it harder for them to engage in social activities. It is important due to this decreased ability, that the parents and children understand how important it is to engage in social participation.
